About

Reca’s jewellery and accessories are elegant, simple and carry a big challenge for today’s fast-fashion industry to switch gears and opt for sustainable alternatives.

“We're here to connect our customers with ethically sourced products, empower women and strengthen independent businesses.”

Reca’s founder, Myint Aung grew up in Myanmar where she encountered harmful stereotypes of how a woman should portray herself. Luckily she was surrounded by strong women who encouraged her to seek independence and to stick up for herself.

When she moved to New Zealand she was inspired by the wide range of opportunities presented to Kiwi women. She created Reca in hopes of empowering women around the world through employment, creativity and independence.

Most of Reca’s products are designed and handcrafted in New Zealand where they train and employ former refugees to make beautiful jewellery.

Reca also partners with artisans around the world - building personal relationships with their suppliers because they know that cutting out the middle-man means more goes to the hard-working artisans.

Many of the organisations they partner with, are too small or disadvantaged to be certified as 'fair trade'. That’s why Reca has developed a set of principles that they demand from any organisation or artisan they work with:

  • The products are creating opportunities for disadvantaged women

  • There is no forced labour in creating the products

  • There is no child labour used in creating the products

  • The artisans are paid a living wage, or are being paid a fair price for their products

  • There are good, safe working conditions

  • They must be transparent and let Reca visit to see the working conditions.

Some of the suppliers that Reca works with are Threads of Peru, Tayo Collective in the Philippines and Pehn Lehn in Cambodia. All of these organizations lift up marginalized women and give them access to unprecedented freedom.

“When you buy one a piece from Reca, you can be sure that you're helping women build a better future for themselves.”

While Reca’s main goal is to give women the opportunity to lead a better life, it's also important to them that they create amazing products that consumers love. They use quality materials, and design their range to be timeless, effortless and uplifting.

They also take pride in choosing ethical and eco-friendly packaging for all their products.
