About
Kōkako was established as one of New Zealand’s first organic Fairtrade coffee roasters in 2001 and they now supply perfectly roasted coffee and drinking chocolate to thousands of homes and 70 cafes across Aotearoa.
Like every product, coffee is subject to the volatile ups and downs of the global economy. And the people most affected by these swings are often the farmers who grow it. Sometimes these farmers are forced to sell their harvest at a loss - which can be devastating for their families.
Fairtrade certified coffee provides an important safety net by guaranteeing stability through a minimum price, and protecting farmers from sudden price drops and unfair practices. It also enables farmers to negotiate better terms of trade and reach wider markets.
That’s why Kōkako ensures that all of their coffee beans, chocolate and ingredients come through certified Fairtrade suppliers.

The Kōkako team takes annual visits to Papua New Guinea to meet with the farmers of their coffee and understand the needs and issues they are facing. The effects of climate change is already being acutely felt on their farmers, so they work with the Fairtrade system to help them discover, trial and implement new farming practices to compact the environmental changes they are dealing with.
Alongside their commitment to fairer trade conditions Kōkako recognizes the importance of product stewardship in their supply chain. All their coffee, as well as the two ingredients in their drinking chocolate, come from organic farms that value diversity and invest in soil health, and everything is bagged in NZ made home-compost friendly packaging.
Locally, Kōkako support their namesake bird through the work of the Rotoehu Ecological Trust to 'bring back the music' of the native kōkako bird to the forest area they manage in the Bay of Plenty.
