About

At Karma Drinks, they believe that what you drink should not only taste good, but be good for the land, good for the people who grow the ingredients and as good for you as a fizzy drink can be.

The world drinks more than a million colas per minute but the people who grow kola nuts see very little of that profit.

Watch this video to learn more about Karma Drink’s cola farmers.

Karma Drinks gets their kola nuts from eight communities in the Tiwai region of Sierra Leone.

When they first started trading, these people had just survived a ten-year civil war.  They needed to rehabilitate their rainforest farms, rebuild their villages, and earn an income.

The Karma Cola Foundation was founded to make sure the people who grow kola get something back from the people who drink it. Profits from all of Karma’s drinks, from juiced to kombucha, go to support this non-profit in Sierra Leone.

They support kola farmers by purchasing kola nuts from them directly and by supporting projects to develop infrastructure and education.

“We set up the Karma Cola Foundation to make sure that if we grow, they grow too.”

The Karma Cola Foundation recognizes that the people in the Tiwai Community have the best understanding of their own needs. That’s why they never dictate where their community funds get spent but allow the Tiwathem to independently decide on which projects to support.

To date, representatives of the community have:

  • provided bursaries for more than 133 young girls to school

  • supported 5 teachers who have educated 614 students

  • provided seed funding for 7 villages

  • built two rice-processing centres to secure food supply;

  • supported an educational HIV/AIDS theatre group

  • funded medical supplies during the Ebola epidemic

  • rehabilitated rainforest farms,

  • developed a seed bank for future seasons

  • helped a group of entrepreneurs start up their own small businesses,

  • set up an adult literacy programme

  • built 3 bridges

  • and trained community organisers and leaders

“Karma is the ethos behind the business – the more Karma Cola we sell the more good we can do.”

Karma Drinks live up to their name and their Fairtrade certification. The company has been named one of The World’s Most Ethical Companies by The Ethisphere Institute for two years in a row and been awarded ‘The World’s Fairest Trader’ by The Fairtrade Foundation.

In addition to being Fairtrade, Karma Drinks have searched far and wide for the most delicious organic ingredients to make their drinks.

“Organic farming puts less stress on the land to get more out of it. We choose organic produce because we believe in treating the planet like our own backyard and choosing ingredients grown with care.”

Karma Drinks are doing their part to make sure their delicious fizzy drinks are having a positive impact on our world.
