About

Hamodava Tea, Coffee, and Cocoa began in 1897, when Commandant Herbert Booth of The Salvation Army & fellow Salvationist, Adjutant Ashley Lamb, entered the tea market as a fundraising enterprise. It continued until 1930 when competition from other importers made the enterprise unviable. 

In 2016 The Salvation Army re-established Hamodava as a coffee company, continuing the fair and ethical trading practices in its sourcing of ingredients for its product range: green coffee beans, instant coffee, and drinking cocoa.

Since 1897 Hamodava has committed to partnering with farming communities. 120 years ago they worked closely to support the work of the Doomoo tea estate. This partnership sought to give farmers ownership over the land they worked, fair wages, and ultimately financial independence. 

Now, Hamodava sources their coffee and cocoa from fairtrade certified co-operatives in Nicaragua, Columbia, and Ghana and is invested in the very same positive outcomes that fairtrade seeks for farming communities.

All Hamodava products carry the fairtrade mark. This certification works to ensure that no form of modern slavery, child labour, or human trafficking exists within the supply chain.

Within its New Zealand market, Hamodava works to ensure that where possible, its products reflect a care for the environment and sustainable practices. This can be seen in their use of compostable packaging, locally produced consumables, and our efforts to reduce the use of single-use products.

100% of proceeds raised in New Zealand go directly to supporting the Salvation Army's front-line social work in New Zealand communities.
