About

It was a Christmas Eve in Kolkata, India, when slavery became real to Pete and Alanna, the founders of 27seconds Wine.

Passing through an alleyway they noticed a group of teenage girls who, they were told, had been trafficked from Nepal and sold into prostitution.

“In that moment, the penny dropped. We had just looked into the eyes of modern day slaves.”

Most people think that humans left slavery in the previous century, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

There are more people in slavery today than ever before. 21 million people is the conservative estimate, while the Global Slavery Index suggests the number could be closer to 40.3 million.

Alanna and Pete were desperate to help but unsure of where to start. After some thinking they decided to utilise Pete’s expertise as the manager of his family’s vineyard, Terrace Edge, and create a wine where 100% of the profits go towards helping to end slavery.

They decided to call the wine ‘27seconds’ after a Unicef statistic that estimates 1.2 million children are sold into slavery every year. When you break that statistic down it works out to be one every 27 seconds.

“Our goal is simple. Make good wine and sell lots of it, so that together we can make a difference.”

Alanna and Pete grow the grapes on their own vineyard and get 27seconds wine made at a local winery. Everyone involved in the process is paid a fair wage, offered flexible hours and encouraged to upskill.

The couple also believes that caring for the land is really important. The grapes grown at their vineyard are 100% organic.

Occasionally the demand for 27second wine has been so high that they’ve needed to source some grapes from their neighbouring vineyards who are certified by the NZ Winegrowers Sustainability programme.

Every time you purchase a bottle of 27second wine, you help play a small part in helping survivors of slavery. 100% of the profits go to Hagar, which is an incredible organisation providing survivors with trauma care, education & economic empowerment.

The 27seconds team hope that their quality wine will make a big difference.
