Our Story
Corcovado was born out of a desire to create homes that feel more authentic and unique, where natural, sustainable materials are celebrated and the work of human hands acknowledged.
“We believe that well-designed, handmade furniture created from natural, sustainable materials truly impacts mental health and emotional well being.”
Corcovado offers an expansive range of furniture, lighting, decorations and rugs. Almost every piece that forms part of the Corcovado furniture range has been designed by Larissa Hamilton in New Zealand.
They consciously choose to work with and support other small New Zealand businesses, manufacturers and artisans as they make their sofas and armchairs. For their wood and rattan items, Corcovado works with small family groups of creative craftspeople living in Indonesia.
Ensuring the longevity of these traditional Indonesian techniques, passed from generation to generation, is important to the Corcovado team.
Having lived in Indonesia for 3 years, the founders understand what every order placed means to the families they work with.
The team regularly checks in on their suppliers to ensure that they are all of working age, taking breaks, and are well paid.
“Safe and ethical working conditions are crucial to us. One reason we only work with small workshops is so that we can actually see and hear what is going on.”
Corcovado only uses teak wood that has been sustainably-sourced from government certified plantations in Indonesia.
Sustainability is crucial for them because they believe in creating functional and beautiful items that will last for years to come. They use teak wood because it is durable and Rattan because it is a quick-grow crop.
Changes to the monsoon patterns and the "rainy season" can impact whether or not certain crops can be harvested in time, so the Corcovado team is always ready to adjust their orders (i.e. choose to use a different material if the husks are not dry) to ensure that they can still order to allow livelihoods to continue.
At the end of the day, the Corcovado team believes that people should always come before profit and they make every effort to ensure that their suppliers are not just living, but thriving.
