Our Story
Dilmah makes more than just a humble cup of tea. The brand was founded by Merrill J. Fernando on the belief that business is a matter of human service. That principle remains a foundation of everything they do to this day.
The tea industry over the centuries has been, perhaps, one of the most unethical trades. Tea workers suffered (and some still suffer) through inhumane working conditions, abject income levels, poor housing and job-related health problems.
In the 1980s, Mr. Fernando decided to create a tea brand that directly benefited the communities who produce the tea and the environment in which it is grown.
“Dilmah does business in a truly ethical manner, ensuring that all employees and workers have their basic necessities and are treated fairly.”
In addition to providing a fair wage, Dilmah plantation workers receive:
Free housing
Medical care
Holiday pay and bonuses
Pensions
and childcare facilities
Dilmah’s pure Ceylon tea is proudly grown, picked and packed fresh at the source. This is unique in a world where the vast majority of major tea brands are far removed from the tea fields and often compromise the authenticity, freshness and quality of their tea by blending it. Dilmah Tea, on the other hand, is pure goodness.
If that wasn’t good enough, 15% of the profits from every pack of Dilmah is given to MJF Charitable Foundation and Dilmah Conservation, which fund projects that are benefitting thousands of lives and making the world better.
Through the Merrill J. Fernando (MJF) Charitable Foundation, funds go toward improving the living standards among Sri Lankan tea estate workers and the community at large.
Dilmah Conservation works to promote the sustainable use of the environment in partnership with other organisations including:
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS)
Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL)
and a number of professional and academic institutions
Dilmah has made a comprehensive commitment to minimize their impact on the planet and encourage a harmonious coexistence of man and nature. They are also committed to being open and transparent about their sustainability journey.
