Our Story

Blue Coconut was dreamt up in Canterbury with family and friends roped in to label small batches of hand-poured pots.

At first, the team tapped into cold-pressed coconut oil. However, having come from a medical background, they also wanted something that was extremely safe.

The solution was to expand into refined oil for a clean medical-grade oil that doesn't have an aroma or flavour, and thereby has a broader range of applications in cooking.

Blue Coconut is refined in New Zealand under AUS and NZ certified and licensed for Food Safety HACCP rules. Their pure coconut oil contains no additives, contaminants or trans-fats and is naturally cholesterol-free.

“Sourced from our blue Pacific neighbours, every purchase of Blue Coconut oil contributes to the success of small island communities.”

Fair Labour Commitments

Blue Coconut purchase their coconut oil from many village communities throughout the Pacific, from Rabaul in the North to Vanuatu, Samoa and Fiji in the East.

They have long-standing partnerships in more than 50 villages and have been engaging in direct trade for more than 11 years. They also pay a higher price than is usual, ensuring stable income for coconut farmers in these regions.

They have also made it easy for consumers to discover which Pacific Island your oil is sourced from by entering the batch number on your tub into their website.

Environmental Commitments

Blue Coconut mainly uses plastic to package their products in. While they have considered glass jars, there are a number of concerns.

Glass jars have a large carbon footprint (being mostly imported, they travel a long way to get to NZ, and are quite heavy which means they consume a lot of non-renewable fuel on the trip), they are expensive to produce and transport, and breakage causes a lot of waste too. Not to mention that sand, the main component of glass, is also becoming scarce in the world.

As they explore plant-based packaging options, their current packaging are plastics numbered 5 and are recyclable by your local council.
