Our Story

ReCreate was founded by Erica Gadsby after volunteering in the marginalised community of Dey Tmey, Cambodia over a number of years. The population there is predominantly made up of slum dwellers who were ‘relocated’ by the government from the capital city of Phnom Penh.

As this relocation area was far from the new residents’ former jobs and schools, the people quickly found themselves in desperate situations with little opportunity for employment or education. Income was found through prostitution, drugs, washing clothes and selling food. Children were kept home from school to collect rubbish, watch siblings, or in the worst cases sold for slave labour or to brothels.

As the years passed, opportunities for women to find rightful employment remained scarce. So, in 2013, the ReCreate sewing centre was launched. There, students learn the garment production process from design and pattern-making through to sewing a finished garment. Throughout this process they are paid a wage to support themselves and their families as they learn.

“It is with your support that we will not only see transformation in the fashion industry, but together, we will transform lives.”

ReCreate’s women's clothing range is beautifully designed in New Zealand with a focus on versatility and timelessness. It is ethically and sustainably produced throughout their entire supply chain - from the farmers growing their cotton all the way to you. Online orders are shipped in plant-based courier bags that can be composted at home.

ReCreate operates in partnership with a New Zealand Registered Charitable Trust, committing 100% of their profits towards empowering disadvantaged people and communities in Cambodia.

Every year ReCreate aims to provide even more opportunities within the Dey Tmey community, empowering people to provide for themselves, their families and their futures.

In addition to sewing training, they also support and partner with a Cambodian charity to provide a number of community initiatives which include:

  • Family support through food assistance, financial and social support

  • School sponsorship through the provision of uniforms, stationery and school fees

  • Medical assistance through pregnancy and birth, serious illness and injury, hospital stays and community medical clinics

  • Community development through the provision of clean water and the construction of community toilets and homes for families in need.
