Our Story
Ziwi Baby believes in slow production and making clothes with care for people & the planet. They work closely with factory partners in India to bring their nature-inspired collections to life.
Every ingredient in their clothing - from the cotton & dyes right down to the sewing thread & snap buttons - is carefully chosen for quality, safety and sustainability. Not only is their cotton certified organic, but their garments are Global Textile Organic Standard (GOTS) certified from seed to garment. This means that no harmful chemicals are used in the journey of organic cotton from tiny seeds to little clothes.
“Our clothes are made by staff who earn fair wages and work in a safe & respectful environment free from all forms of labour exploitation. By being mindful of Mother Earth and the people who live here, we hope to leave a better world to pass on to our children.”
Ziwi Baby believes in slow production - making clothes with care for people and the planet. They work closely with a GOTS-certified factory partner in India where staff work in a fair, safe and respectful environment free from all forms of labour exploitation. There, farmers plant natural, non-GMO seeds which can be shared with other farmers or saved for future seasons. Their organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilisers and defoliants so there is no run-off of these chemicals into local waterways. Farmers employ traditional agricultural practices which work in harmony with the natural environment and foster a sense of community.
One of Ziwi Baby’s organic farmers, Kalaivani (photo courtesy of India Water Portal) is a community leader and single mother of three, who supplies cotton to their spinning mill. She travels to the surrounding villages to mentor farmers on organic farming practices.
Slow, ethical production is an important part of the ZiwiBaby philosophy. Their factory partners are independently audited to ensure:
Fair wages (defined as a living wage which is enough to meet basic needs and provide some discretionary income).
Safe working conditions (free from physical hazards, and is emotionally safe
Reasonable working hours are reasonable (up to a maximum of 48 hours per week, with regular rest/meal breaks and a minimum of one day off for every seven day period).
Employment security, providing workers with a consistent income to provide for their families
Equal opportunities - no discrimination (e.g. pay disparities) are permitted based on gender, ethnicity, religion and immigration status.
Zero tolerance for child labour or bonded labour
Ethical labour from farm to garment - every employer in the supply chain is regularly and independently audited
Ziwi Baby also aims to operate in harmony with the planet. They ensure that all their garments are made from 100% organically grown cotton, without the use of agrichemicals - pesticides, fertilisers and defoliants - so there is no chemical run-off into local waterways or contamination of precious drinking water. They reduce water by using rainwater and compost to nourish cotton plants instead of irrigation and fertiliser. Their colours & print designs are dyed or printed using GOTS-approved, water-based and non-toxic dyes and inks.
To minimise plastic within their supply chain, Ziwi Baby makes their tags from recycled paper and cotton yarn. They also bulk pack their garments instead of individually wrapping them in plastic polybags and use home-compostable mailers to ship to customers.
