Our Story
After the birth of their first child in 1998, Jacob and Georgia were inspired to find natural and organic alternatives for their children to wear, rather than resorting to mainstream products that were mostly synthetic or unsustainable.
“At Nature Baby we go by the philosophy that our clothing be made in a way that treats all people that take part in the process fairly, from the farmers and millers through to the cutters and makers, supporting localized regions, their families and their development.”
Fair Labour Commitments
98% of Nature Baby’s range is produced in India. 1% is produced in China and 1% is produced in Fiji.
One of their factories in India produces 85% of their collection, where they have had a longstanding relationship with their manufacturer, Amit, and visit their factory at least once a year.
They also have a Code of Conduct for their factories which include these terms:
all labour is child free
have a safe and healthy workplace
have rights to collective bargaining
no discrimination, based on race, gender or sexual orientation
be paid the minimum wage and comply with all laws relating to benefits and overtime
no excessive use of over time
At the moment, 87% of Nature Baby’s range is certified by the textile gold standard and internationally recognised GOTS and SA8000, which covers environmental responsibility as well as social responsibility (to ensure all workers making our products are getting a fair deal). ALL their factories are audited to an SA8000, Fairtrade, BSCI or the WRAP Standard, and they continue to improve their range to ensure their collections are made in the most ethical and sustainable way.
Nature Baby has 100% transparency of their tier one garment factories, and tier two fabric and dyeing houses.
91% of the cotton they use is GOTS certified organic, which is grown by a family of farmers and fully traced by the certification authorities. Together, Nature Baby have 6 main apparel factories, 11 fabric suppliers and dye houses, and 8 mills.
Environmental Commitments
Nature Baby uses GOTS certified organic cotton for 85% of their range. GOTS certified organic merino wool tops make up 4% and ZQ accredited NZ merino wool make up 10% of their collections. The remaining 1% is non-certified ( swimwear range). They are continually working to source the best organic and sustainable fabrics for their garments.
All their packaging is made from recycled and recyclable materials. Their in-store shopping bags have always been paper. Their garments are packed in bio-bags made from potato starch, which are fully biodegradable, to ensure they are kept clean throughout transit and in storage. These bags are then collected from stores and their warehouse to be commercially composted.
Nature Baby also encourages their customers to keep their clothes circulating long after their babies have outgrown them. Nature Baby is the most-searched childrenswear brand on TradeMe in New Zealand, and have dedicated Facebook pages to re-sell pre-loved Nature Baby garments.
