Products, Values and Certifications

We design and manufacture reusable celebration products including Christmas crackers, gift bags in sets of 5 or 10(designed to replace traditional gift wrap), furoshiki wraps, and Sew Your Own kits. All products are made from 100% cotton with recycled satin ribbon, using digital printing methods that eliminate toxic dyes and water pollution. Our reusable crackers feature a patent-pending design engineered to replicate the traditional cracker-pulling experience while lasting for generations.

Our products are handcrafted by 26 women in our Kabul, Afghanistan workshop, all carefully selected because they have no other household income. We pay above minimum wage and prioritize employment for women experiencing extreme hardship under the current regime. Our Christmas Re-Crackers won Gold Medal and Editor’s Choice at the Australian Clean & Conscious Awards, recognizing both innovation and sustainability impact.

Our Story

Waste Free Celebrations began with a simple frustration: the mountains of wrapping paper, ribbons, and disposable decorations filling bins after every celebration. We knew there had to be a better way to mark special occasions without contributing to landfill waste. In 2021, we faced a decision – close the business or move manufacturing offshore to remain viable.

The answer came through Rahila, our Head of Production, who had fled Afghanistan as a toddler and arrived in New Zealand as a refugee in 2014. She volunteered to return to Kabul to establish our workshop, providing other Afghan women the opportunities she never had. Today, what started as a business necessity has become our greatest strength – creating employment for vulnerable women while delivering sustainable celebration solutions to families worldwide.

Kiwis produce 30% more waste at Christmas than any other time of year and our goal is to reduce this to zero.
