Our Story

Tonic & Cloth is an ethical and sustainable clothing brand with a heart for empowering women. Tonic & Cloth’s clothes are gentle on the body. Their trousers, shirts and dresses are designed to let your tummy ‘be’, while still bringing ‘the wow’ into your everyday looks.

We want women to feel beautiful and strong in the clothes they wear, no matter what they face each day. And we want those who make the clothes to feel empowered and honoured through the process.

Tonic & Cloth’s store and studio is located in Palmerston North, New Zealand and they partner with seamstresses and ethical brands from around the world.

All of Tonic & Cloth’s garments are either made in New Zealand or by Holi Boli in India.

Holi Boli provides a safe and welcoming working environment based on connection and empowerment. They teach women to sew, then provide opportunities for upskilling and for stepping into positions of authority. There is no slavery, child labour or human trafficking in either the manufacturing or fabric sourcing in India.

You can read more about Holi Boli here.

In New Zealand, they manufacture with their trusted supplier UMSIKO. They also make garments in-store in New Zealand – ‘One of a Kind Wednesday’ pieces, to custom makes and of course collection samples and small production runs.

In addition, the Tonic and Cloth store stocks a variety of items from:

The seamstresses at Holi Boli say they get a sense of belonging at our sewing house. They feel free to laugh, relax and know it is a safe place to be a woman.

The Holi Boli team is always eager to expand. They offer a sewing course to local women where they teach the basics of pattern making, fabric cutting and garment construction.

At the end of the four-month course, the women leave with a certificate in hand and head held high as they walk into a new future.

Holi Boli’s clothing collections are characterised by classic, feminine designs that celebrate being a woman. Each of their garments is made from natural, plant-based fabrics and sewed to the highest standard of tailoring.

Their high-quality textiles are locally sourced from fair trade suppliers, which ensures that the fabrics they use have been produced to minimise environmental impact and treat workers with respect.

All of these brands ensure that their workers are safe, empowered and well-compensated.

Made from beautiful, natural fibres the Tonic & Cloth collection is as kind on the Earth as is to people.

In India, Tonic & Cloth purchase GOTS certified organic cotton from Mehera Shaw, Herbal Fab and KG Denim, India to create their garments. For their New Zealand production, they use deadstock from a fabric wholesaler, which saves usable fabric from going to landfill.
