Our Story

Designed in New Zealand and ethically hand-crafted at Holi Boli’s production house in Bhalupali village, India, Holi Boli creates timeless, high-quality pieces made from sustainable natural, breathable fabrics—think floaty floral cottons, raw/organic denims, and textured linens—all pre-washed for size integrity. Each design is thoughtfully made for real women’s bodies, with adjustable waistlines that can be cinched with sash belts or ties, and pants often featuring elasticated back waistbands for added comfort and movement.

Co-founded by New Zealand fashion designer Ana Wilkinson-Gee, who lived in the village for ten years on a mission to empower women through sewing classes, Holi Boli officially began in 2013 when graduate Lakshmi asked for a job. This sparked the creation of a safe space where sewing graduates could receive fair wages, continue developing their sense of identity and self-worth, feed their kids, and fight poverty.

Since then, more than 200 women have completed Holi Boli’s sewing courses, while many of the 21 women now employed at its in-house production facility have become the main earners in their families. Through their work, these women have been able to improve their living standards—funding the construction of bathrooms in their homes, replacing mud floors with concrete, and gaining the ability to make choices that shape their futures.

They are finding their voice, growing in confidence, and standing strong in a world where they were once expected to stay silent. Their shared mantra says it all: “We are strong women who lift others up.”

Holi Boli’s garments are made from natural, plant-based fabrics sourced from fair trade or end-of-roll suppliers. Since starting New Zealand production in 2020, over 1,148 metres of fabric has been diverted from going to landfill. By only making small runs of each style, and repurposing offcuts for community sewing classes or home projects, excess waste and overproduction have been eliminated at Holi Boli.

Known for timeless, feminine designs sewn to the highest tailoring standards, each Holi Boli piece honours both the maker and the wearer.

Every purchase helps grow a global sisterhood—women empowering women, standing together for dignity, opportunity, and a better future.
