About

SHE MADE THIS supports women in developing countries by ensuring they are fairly rewarded for their creativity and artisan skills. They carefully source and sell gorgeous handmade items that carry a story.

Shoppers at SHE MADE THIS can add personality to their home and help women achieve a better quality of life for themselves and their families.

Steph Johnstone founded SHE MADE THIS after living in Dhaka, Bangladesh and seeing first hand how fairtrade stores and factories could help marginalised people find hope, healing and economic independence.

As a ceramicist and painter, Steph particularly enjoyed meeting women whose lives had been transformed by their art.

“It was uplifting to see women from desperate, hopeless circumstances being fairly rewarded for their creativity and artisan skills.”

Some of their beautiful baskets, bags and other products were finding willing buyers in many overseas markets, but they didn’t have a partner in New Zealand.

So Steph decided to set up SHE MADE THIS and partner with a Bangladesh charity to bring these women’s hand-crafted goods to Kiwis. Since then SHE MADE THIS has grown their supplier list to support female artisans in other countries including Nepal and China.

All of SHE MADE THIS suppliers offer living wages and safe working conditions to their makers. Many are also attached to NGOs that provide job training, education and childcare, and workers earn 2-3 times what they would otherwise.

“Supporting women in developing countries has huge impacts on these women, their families and their wider community in so many ways.”

SHE MADE THIS suppliers are also making a positive impact on the environment. They use natural dyes to prevent water pollution and use sustainable materials like wool, clay and jute in their creations.

Orders are shipped in recyclable brown paper and jute string packaging.
