About

Little Yellow Bird produces sustainable clothes made by thriving people. They only work with the best ethical factories they can find -- all of which are GOTS or Fairtrade certified.

“We don’t just meet the minimum legal requirements, we exceed them, lifting the bar for the entire industry.”

Little Yellow Bird doesn’t employ anyone under the age of 18 and they regularly audit each factory against a high bar of social and sustainability criteria.

The process of turning cotton fibre into fabric is complex, but Little Yellow Bird is able to trace theirs from farm to factory. The cotton is ginned, spun and woven or knitted to create high-quality premium fabrics that are bespoke to Little Yellow Bird.

They proudly support small scale farmers that are promoting sustainable agricultural practices and working to regenerate, not destroy the land that they rely on.

Little Yellow Bird sources the best natural and sustainable fibres they can find. Their cotton is rain-fed, making it better for people and the planet. Instead of using toxic pesticides and fertilisers, Little Yellow Bird farmers rely on crop rotation, natural fertilisers and cow pee to keep the soil fertile and the pests away.

In addition, they take many other steps to ensure they are minimizing their impact on the planet, including:

  • Shipping as many of their products by sea freight as possible, which minimizes pollution.

  • Sending orders in paper mail bags or cardboard boxes.

  • Making products that last, and that can also be sent back to them for remanufacture.

  • Using non-toxic, AZO free, GOTS-certified dyes

  • Using a closed-loop process to dye their clothes so that 95% of the water used is returned to drinking quality. (The remaining 5% is used in bricks and road materials).

  • Fabric scraps and seconds from their production are repurposed with local Indian NGOʼs and partnerships with design schools in New Zealand.

Little Yellow Bird goes the extra distance to ensure that they’re making a difference in the world by funding several outside initiatives.  Several projects they support revolve around the educational, sanitary and healthcare needs of cotton farm communities they work with.

“We believe in not only producing sustainably and ethically made clothing, but also in making a positive impact in the communities that help make our apparel.”
