Description
Our Story
Jibana’s founders have long been connected to social-impact businesses in India, inspiring a commitment to creating ventures that provide real-world economic opportunities for marginalised communities. Aware of the producer behind Jibana’s products and noting that many of these items were not available in New Zealand, they decided to introduce them to the local market.
The company’s mission is to grow a business that grows people: every product sold creates work for artisans, providing economic and social empowerment for them and their families. Jibana values being part of this “hand up” and is guided by a practical, hands-on approach to building the business.
The founders feel fortunate to work with a New Zealand distributor who shares their vision and commitment to impact. While much has been learned along the way, they continue to embrace the journey of growth, discovery, and learning.
We are driven by the belief that our choices can contribute to a better world, both for the environment and the communities we support. Each of our products are crafted with the highest standards of care, ensuring a meaningful and dignified farewell for your loved ones.
Fair Labour Commitments
Jibana’s supplier was founded in 2006 with a simple idea: to create high-quality products from natural materials abundant in rural Bangladesh, sourcing sustainably while providing meaningful employment and positive environmental impact. Today, the supplier operates its own product development and manufacturing unit, offering secure jobs to over 150 people, many from economically marginalised backgrounds.
The supplier emphasizes that its products are made in a supportive environment with fair working conditions, meeting the growing demand from consumers conscious of their impact on people and the planet. By providing employment and opportunity, the supplier helps transform lives and communities in Bangladesh, ensuring customers know that their purchases create real, positive change.
Since its inception, the supplier has operated in line with the 10 standards set by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO). They are a full member of the Bangladesh Fair Trade Forum (ECOTA) and became Guaranteed Members of the WFTO in July 2017. Regular assessments ensure these standards are maintained for ongoing accreditation. Jibana’s founder plans to visit the Bangladesh production facility in January 2026 to see the next harvest and the manufacturing process firsthand.

Environmental Commitments
Jibana’s supplier uses only sustainably managed materials, harvested according to best-practice standards. They work with over 80 local smallholder farmers, sourcing materials annually from the farmers’ own gardens while ensuring fair prices and maintaining close relationships with each supplier. Materials vary by product, but sustainability is prioritised through careful assessment. Products are designed to maximise material use and minimise waste and energy consumption during manufacture.
Products
Jibana sells eco-friendly caskets, scatter tubes, and urns made from hand-woven willow, bamboo, seagrass, and jute.
