Our Story
BY TONIN was created by husband-and-wife team, Carlo and Mia Tonin, as a way to make jewellery that cares for both the people who wear it and the people who make it. Over the years, they’ve learned to slow down and make choices that reflect their values, which naturally shapes how they approach every part of the process.They began with a focus on responsibility and respect, and building a business that truly reflects these values is a constant learning process. Understanding ethical sourcing, fair labour, and sustainable practices is something they’re learning every day. They work with a certified partner who uses responsibly sourced and recycled materials wherever possible, and they produce in small batches so they can give close attention to every detail.
Some of their biggest challenges have been balancing ethical practices with the realities of running a small business. It hasn’t always been straightforward, but each challenge reinforces why they do what they do.
Every piece created is a result of careful decisions and collaboration with people they trust, carrying theur intention to act mindfully towards both people and the planet. Through BY TONIN, they hope to show that jewellery can be created responsibly. Their social justice goals focus on ethical sourcing, fair working conditions, and reducing harm to the planet. These principles guide how they grow and make decisions.
The jewellery is designed with simplicity, subtle detail, and mindful craftsmanship. Each demi-fine piece—available in gold-plated or gold vermeil—is crafted to be beautiful, accessible, and sustainable. Produced in small batches, the collection of rings, necklaces, and earrings is designed for everyday wear, with a focus on quality, durability, and reducing waste.
Fair Labour Commitments
BY TONIN works with a single jewellery manufacturing partner based in China, with no subcontracting. Makers are located across provinces such as Guangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Hubei, bringing skill, care, and dedication to every piece.
The partner is certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council and audited by Intertek to ensure safe, fair, and supportive workplaces. Policies strictly prohibit child labour, forced labour, harassment, and discrimination, while protecting freedom of association. Workers are paid above local living wage standards, receive benefits such as social insurance and paid leave, and have access to flexible arrangements that support parents. Overtime is compensated according to law, and clear channels exist for workers to raise concerns.
This partnership also provides opportunities for skill development, mentorship, and career growth, helping workers support their families and strengthen local communities. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications further confirm high standards of quality, safety, and environmental care.
BY TONIN maintains a close relationship with the factory founder to ensure values are upheld from raw materials to finished pieces. While an in-person visit is planned for 2026, regular audits and ongoing transparency efforts help safeguard workers’ rights and dignity. The care invested by each maker is reflected in every piece, creating a meaningful connection between maker and wearer.

Environmental Commitments
BY TONIN’s manufacturing partner is ISO 14001 certified, ensuring resources are used responsibly, waste is minimised, and environmental impact is regularly reviewed. Recycled metals are used wherever possible, and jewellery is produced in small batches to reduce the footprint and encourage conscious consumption through fewer, higher-quality pieces.
All materials are carefully selected for quality and safety. The jewellery is nickel-free and complies with REACH and California Proposition 65 standards, meaning it is free from harmful substances above safe limits.
Packaging is designed to be sustainable, using FSC-certified papers and recyclable mailers instead of plastic. A reusable velvet pouch and eco-friendly inks and glues are also used, with compliance verified by SGS certifications.
Many makers live in regions affected by environmental challenges such as flooding and industrial pollution. While BY TONIN’s direct influence is limited, working with responsible partners helps reduce harm and support healthier communities.
Environmental care is seen as an ongoing journey, with practices regularly reviewed to create jewellery that respects both people and the planet.
