Our Story

All of the rugs in the Weave collection are exclusively handwoven in India, using a technique called flat weave. The result is a rug that is textural, appealing and perfectly suited to New Zealand’s relaxed interiors.

Our designs, patterns and colours are inspired by nature and the natural materials used to make them.

One of the largest carpet weaving areas of the world is located in Northern India, Pakistan and Nepal.

Rug weaving has been a part of community tradition in these locations for centuries – nomadic sheepherders spinning their wool and then weaving it on looms into beautiful artisan rugs in traditional designs.

Today, rug weaving on handlooms is the livelihood of 6.5 million families in India, the second-biggest employment sector in the country. So, making sure that people are treated fairly at work can make a difference in many, many lives.

As handloom weaving is often done within family groupings and homes, rather than in a factory space, monitoring to make sure safe and fair employment practices are being followed can be difficult.

That’s why the Weave team visits their suppliers in India to review the facilities and ensure that everyone is safe and well-paid.

To further support ethical practices in carpet weaving, Weave partners with Care & Fair – an organisation helping to improve living standards of rug weavers and educate companies on how to take social responsibility from within the industry.

Currently, Care & Fair owns and supports 21 facilities across carpet weaving regions. As a result, 3400 children have the opportunity to attend school at no cost to their families, another 60,000 people benefit from medical treatment and they have introduced the Women Empowerment Programs to help build futures.

All aspects of environmental protection are important to the Weave team. They offer transparency and certification on where the raw materials used in their rugs are sourced from, and they are working towards developing a company-wide environmental and sustainability policy.
